Posted by Unknown on 14th Dec 2017 only took 10 minutes to fix! Slide hammers and sledge hammers will almost never work since the axle is springy and will easily absorb wacks with the hammer. Have an assistant hold the shifter itself as much in Neutral as possible. This Ford Performance Short Throw Shifter is designed and manufactured by the Ford Racing Team. My car has 75K miles on it. Got the new one on and they completely changed the feel of the shifter really tight super crisp great product all around. One of these will require a 220v 30A circuit, though.
Posted by Bruce on 31st Jan 2018 I am so happy that I found this to repair my car. It really sucked driving 19 miles an hour all the way there with two young kids in the back seat. On nearly everything else, including the bolts that hold the shift tower in place- use anti-seize. The bolts are all different lengths. We're going to remove our stock shifter.
Installation of this shifter is simple because it's a direct-fit replacement for the stock shifter. The factory service manual instructions are fine in the beginning. Now, shift the transmission into 3rd gear by pushing the big lever arm on the top clockwise towards the firewall as far as you can. Have a friend help you. It should come like this from the factory. Then screw the center bolt down to the trans. Here is a picture you might want to take if your memory is bad, or you just want to be sure.
Remove the selector and shift cables from the transaxle. Crawl under, find the shift mechanism on the firewall side of the transmission. Do I need pliers or something to remove it? You push it down and slide the cable up and out. The price is also good. These bolts are not tightened much more than snug. Install was also very simple and pretty straight forward.
A far easier approach is to knock the knuckle off the strut, then pry the knuckle off the lower ball joint with a pickle fork. Then a good wack with a hammer will pop the drivers axle past the circlip that holds it in. We're going to start by removing the shift boot retainer located here. I followed the video on the site and it took me about 10mn max. This last bolt is different than the other bolts, so you have to remember where it goes. It made my job so much easier.
