Metal Slug 3 is a genre masterpiece due to its charming and hyper-violent cartoony graphics, tough-as-nails challenges, creative weapons, and varied level design. The game turned out to be a janky, technical mess with the campaign's spotlight set on an unlikeable cast of characters. Even after the prologue, the choice of race and class is vital and influences how other societies and even individuals perceive you. Missions can be tackled in any order as part of an investigation into what happened to your squad. Hidden throughout those levels are a wealth of secrets, some of which push the skills it teaches you to the absolute limit. After playing through the game for the first time, and seeing how different the game can be with your different choices, Infamous made for a really fun open-world adventure game that offered some great payoff.
Fortunately, sentiments toward Infinite changed dramatically upon the game's release. You can burrow into it. It's partially due to the deft handling of rewards; it doles out new social options, new aspirations, and the possibility of better furniture and wood flooring at a slow but even pace, which keeps you tied to your computer for hours at a time. Sonic Mania adheres to the classic Sonic gameplay of running really fast through loops and straightaways as you collect life-preserving gold rings, dispatch enemies, and free captured fuzzballs from hulking enemy machinery. But the loop of finding my corpse, regaining what I lost, and overcoming that same beast that beat me? And while it may not bring anything new to the genre, it can create obsession-level loyalty if you tend not to look beyond the barrel of a gun. At its peak, Rocket League is a fast-paced aerial ballet, a game that takes seconds to understand, but years to master. Its use of voice acting and efficient visuals is a brilliant addition that's far from superficial.
Its 132 heroes are fun, varied, and tough to master, and can be customized even further by rune and mastery systems. All you need to know is that Black's character, Eddie Rigs, gets sucked into another dimension where metal music is everywhere. Each level also introduces its own unique elements, such as disappearing blocks, colored switches, and keys. From new lands and storylines to monster mounts, dazzling spells, and… erm… the ability to make it rain explosive steam trains, the add to the experience immeasurably. Many mysteries still await me, even in the savage regions I've already charted. The Diablo 2 demo puts you in the role of the Barbarian as you journey through the lands of Sanctuary to battle Blood Raven in one mission from the full version of the game.
The story is well-paced, and the strategy and resource-management missions will lock you into finishing the game. Cuphead lacks the expansive level design featured in Contra and other genre classics, but the hardcore action game gives you a beefy list of complex and satisfying boss fights to overcome, in the style of Treasure's beloved Alien Soldier. I can respect that there were those who missed the thrill of bundling themselves up under the covers with the lights out ready to spook themselves silly, but wasn't there something equally as silly as teaming up with a friend to pull off the secret melee moves like Chris's haymaker on 10 enemies at once? Empire is without doubt or reservation the best Total War yet and is a game of unmatched scope and ambition, with its uniquely compulsive blend of turn-based strategy and real-time tactics. And every so often, you might even win. Bejeweled 3 doesn't remake the franchise, but that isn't the aim. If you crave an expansive and flexible adventure in which your choices actually matter, this is one gamble that will pay off. If you're familiar with the Contra series' fast-paced gameplay, then Cuphead should be right up your alley.
Incredible set-pieces laid the foundation for the variety of objectives many of the story missions asked from you and set the stage for you to pull off slick stealth kills and cleverly avoid detection. You play a Vault Hunter, a treasure hunter looking for an alien vault on the barely colonized planet of Pandora. If you dig driving games, you need this gem in your collection. And yes, they are free full games after download.
But at the same time, they pack a startling amount of detail for games this old. Uncharted 2 is also home to that exquisite section in Tibet where Tenzin comes to Nate's aid and--despite sharing not a single word of common language with the all-American hero--escorts him back to civilization. While The Sims 4 moved in a new direction with some interesting mechanical changes, my biggest disappointment with it was the lack of an open world free of load screens, which was first introduced in The Sims 3 and resulted in a wonderfully seamless experience. Whereas the former tries to contextualize its setting and player-agency through its morality system, Prototype chucks all that out in favor of some dumb, guilt-free, anti-hero thrills. It was a game where you had to solve puzzles, but in order to do so, you had to use a notepad. The pay-off for this constant offensive comes in short bursts--just enough to keep you going, just enough to keep you hopeful for the next excursion.
The look and feel of Warframe has evolved over the years as well, with far-stretching systems changes and huge graphical overhauls that keep it from looking dated. In fact, the only crumby thing to have emerged from the game is how everyone has so voraciously latched onto that line about cake. While Drake's Fortune was enjoyable, Among Thieves took the Uncharted formula and iterated in subtle but smart ways. I can still remember moving the cursor of fire over a Joan of Arc painting only to hear her scream as image burned down in flames, or examining a Supreme Court photo and seeing a Templar ring on Chief Justice Roberts' hand. One of our most downloaded is the infamous Hungry Shark Evolution game. The new skill trees offer dozens of abilities useful both in and out of a fight, though the combat-centric ones like the 300-inspired Spartan Kick and brutally satisfying Shield Breaker often steal the show.
After his father and brothers are framed for treason and subsequently executed by the state, Ezio falls deeper into the bigger conspiracy and evils of the Templars and takes up the Assassin robes to bring justice across Italy. It builds you up for a grand bout that will test everything you've learned, as well as your ability to plan several in-game weeks out. Percentages may not add up to 100% due to rounding. By the end, Prototype went from a dark superhero origin story to a creature-feature showing similar shades to The Thing--with tendrils and bio-organic viscera caking much of the cityscape. It might seem like a short and simple game at first, but between the addictive time-pausing mechanic and some very satisfying and repeatable extra modes, you'll quickly find yourself playing it for hours, and the built-in social media features for sharing your best runs will keep you coming back to get more consecutive, stylish kills.
