The latest step in the complete regeneration of the Kia product line-up over the past three years, the all-new Optima combines distinctive styling with a longer wheelbase, a wider track, increased horsepower, better fuel economy and dramatically improved driving dynamics for enhanced performance and passenger comfort. The old 4-speed manumatic is replaced with a 5-speed manumatic, while the 5-speed manual carries over. Now here comes the 2006. Owners feel both the 2006 and 2006. . Rear seat comfort is average for the class. But faster, livelier steering is needed to wake up our slumbering perkiness meter.
The all-new Optima is built at Kia's Hwasung manufacturing facility in South Korea, and is available currently in showrooms. But there is still work to be done on improving the interior materials. Optima's wider track, tuned suspension and steering system provide better handling characteristics and improved performance over the previous-generation Optima. Okay, maybe a stamping sneaks in and a few parts coincidentally match up, such as the engines. It may not be overtly playful, but the new Optima launches with at least one key asset: boundless optimism. Why would you even bother? Well, neither did we until a rummage through the archive recalled us ranking what was essentially a rebadged Hyundai Sonata ninth of 10 mid-size sedans in a February 2003 comparison test. For safety, dual front-side airbags, foglights, auto-dimming mirrors, front and rear stabilizer bar, and security system are standard. The plastic used for the lower dash panels is a bit glossy, and some of the switches and controls feel more like an economy car than a mainstream midsize sedan. Improved Performance With increased horsepower and torque from the previous-generation vehicle, the all-new Optima offers improved performance and both available powerplants offer improved fuel economy, bettering much of the competition.
And that makes marketing the Optima as a spacious, quiet, performance sedan a difficult proposition. This brand new engine design provides 15 percent more power than the motor it replaces, generating 161 horses at 5,800 rpm and 163 lb. Kia might be positioning the new Optima as a sporty four-cylinder value proposition, but this V6 has got to go. Optima's traction control minimizes wheel spin by applying brake pressure to the slipping wheel, and by reducing engine power when necessary. The engine is refined, and the automatic seems to work better with this engine.
Green Vehicles Find the Kia models that are the cleanest and most fuel efficient. Looking at the specifications, the Optima is a smaller car than the Sonata. Comfort, a critical factor that can make or break any new model, is elusive in the 2006. There's been loose talk of a Kia pickup truck. Buyers seeking a full feature load will want to consider the 2006. The Optima's dimensions creep up only fractions of an inch in most directions, meaning it's now slightly smaller than competing models with more robust growth spurts in their pasts, including the Accord. A longer wheelbase also enhances ride comfort. Meanwhile, the Optima's longer wheelbase and increased width provide more interior volume 104. Action: Kia will notify owners and dealers will replace the front lower control arms on 2006-2007 models. The suspension soaks up road anomalies like a good European sports sedan, swallowing bumps, dips, and potholes with equal aplomb. Kia protects Optima owners in other ways, too.

Optima's suspension layout uses a MacPherson strut setup in front; and the rear's multi-link with coil springs helps provide a healthy balance between a comfortable ride and responsive handling.
