I likely didn't hear it sooner because I always have the radio on and up before driving. It goes through the socket and lets you grab firmly the nut to remove. I took it to my usual mechanic and they said it was the transmission. My mechanic evaluated the transmission and it was beyond repair and needed to be replaced.
